I was reading the quotable quotes in Reader's Digest and this one stood out. It reminded me of my dad.
"Normal
people believe that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Engineers believe
that if it ain't broke, it doesn't have enough features yet." - Scott
Adams in the Dilbert Principle
To fathers out there (past, present or future), HAPPY FATHER'S DAY! ;) | | |
| Summer is on. I had my last exam today (finally) and I just
got a job the other day (I start tomorrow). I'm so excited! I have lots of
goals for this summer. I have a huge craving to go camping. Last time I went
camping was at Christmas time and that was so much fun. I wonder, what ever
happened to my lighter? *humm*
goals for this summer:
* work
* go camping (at least 3x)
* teach myself how to play the piano
* practice drawing portraits (maybe take an art class)
* read a few books I haven't had the time to read
* practice Hungarian
* road trip
* paint my room
* explore photography
* go canoeing
* learn how to skateboard * visit a space observatory
So much to do... time will fly. This is a truism of life. Tomorrow is another
day. | | |
| Song writing... I never really gave it much thought until this past Tuesday. Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes
were guest speakers in creative writing. These guys have been writing
and producing songs for a long time. They covered some of the basics in
song writing of course but there were a few things that they said that
stood out:
* if you're going to challenge people, let them know it. * follow the natural shape of the language * untangle yourself from your work * the audience knows the unwritten rules too; if you break them, break them well or they will break you * don't tell people it's your first time. let them make their own impressions. * object writing is a good source of inspiration... write about the senses, really feel what you are writing about * engage the heart * "If you don't believe in miracles, you could be taking bad advice" - from Rob's song Tender Lullaby * the internal editor can eat at your confidence or it can be a good source of constructive criticism * keep your ideas and old work -- review them from time to time. you'll hear them with new ears and see them with new eyes * study the work of the masters -- there are reasons why they are known as the masters *
keep your eyes and ears open... try new things (even things you think
you may not like). inspiration can come from the weirdest places

| Last night I went to see "The Celestine
Prophecy" pre-showing. After reading most of the book and coming up
with my own ideas of how the story should appear visually, I felt let
down, like I hyped myself up. For this reason, I think I will wait to
read the Da Vinci Code until after I've seen it in theaters.
On the other hand, there were certain scenes with pieces of
wisdom that I had forgotten from the book, certain messages pertaining
to relationships (in general) that I need to hear
again that work right now. The humor was different; plenty of cosmic
jokes. I wonder how my opinion would change after seeing the movie a
second time. Synchronicity. Last Friday I was
talking to a friend (a wise woman). The core message was stop thinking
too much. Later on that evening I was eating Chinese. My fortune from
the cookie said: message received,
*laughs*

It's been a week since my last post (sounds like a
confession).
Monday: I went to the beach with one of my friends... The water was
super cold. There were some scuba divers out there but they said the
highlight of their underwater trip was a steep drop. We ended making and
drawing things in the sand. My friend made this face in the sand (originally it
was going to be medusa but it turned into a demon) and I filmed her squashing
it just before we left. Later on that day I went over to her place and hung out
with her and her roomies until we couldn't stay awake anymore. Accidentally a
plastic bottle caught on fire in the microwave. More stupid videos and crazy
pictures were shot.
Tuesday: It was my long day at school but afterwards I went to this
"Slam Poetry" event. It's kinda like the offspring of rap and poetry
but there isn't any music and the 'lyrics' have many poetic devices. At the
same time it didn't really sound like rap... just someone who’s passionate
about what he is saying. There were some serious poems and then again there
were some that were so funny that everyone broke out laughing. The audience was
encouraged to speak. After the event was over, I went to a friend's house.
Wednesday: I went to a friend's house to hang out with her before she
went on her trip to Victoria.
I get to see her later on this week.
Thursday: I got this wacky idea to go camping for my birthday with a
couple of close friends. So that night I went with one of my friends in the
engineering program all the way to his dad's house to pick up the tent. Once we
found it, the sky began to cry softly but he still showed me how to set it up
on his front lawn anyways. Erg. It had been so bright and sunny for the past
week. After he dropped me off, I went over to a buddy’s house. Later on that
evening we decided that going camping wouldn't be a good idea because of the
weather. The temperature is still around zero at night; her boyfriend's comment
was "Laura... water freezes at that temperature... are you crazy?" So
plans changed...
Friday: My 20th birthday. I only had one class... astronomy. I went with
a few friends to the pub at the CNC to watch the hockey game. Canucks won!
Their first win after 5 games lost... about time. Then we went ice skating. I
use to go figure skating all the time when I lived in Ontario (like a decade ago). Hockey skates
feel different. It was much like riding a bike... it takes a little while for
your body to remember. I didn't fall at all, nor did my legs hurt (even the day
after). After that we tried to find a pub to go to downtown. All my favorite
locations had waits longer than an hour so we went to this pub on a golf course
which had significantly fewer people. Some more people joined us. The bartender
offered to pay for my drink if I could hold it down and I did. After that we
went to a friend's house and played video games and hung out for the rest of
the night. I didn't get home till early in the morning.
Saturday: I went to sleep at about 5:30a and woke up naturally at 8:30a.
I was up for an hour then I went back to sleep. My brother called (you could
say he's a man of few words) but it meant a lot. He’s a WOW addict. I went
hiking later on that day with a friend but we were both tired. We were out
until shortly after dark. After I got home I watched some hockey and Stargate
before passing out. It was the Redwings vs. Oilers - that's all I remember.
Today is hockey day; it's going to be so much fun! Speaking of which… I
should get ready for it. L8r.
